I like it when I can hold a conversation with my characters. My mom gave me this t-shirt that says “Writer’s block is when your imaginary friends won’t talk back to you.” I think this is perfectly true. It was strangely comfortable, which isn’t always the case. Was it hard to get back into that voice after writing several other books, or did it feel comfortable from the beginning? May Amelia has such a distinct voice and the writing style is unusual (the dialogue not being in quotations, the use of randomly capitalized words for emphasis). ![]() But when I got down to writing it, I couldn’t get May Amelia’s voice out of my head (she’s bossy that way.) Among other wonderfully rich advice, Rilke reckons solitude enables becoming-"love your solitude" he advises, and "seek answers within": Echoing the wisdom of many, including physicist Alan Lightman and the delightful Durga Chew-Bose, Rilke's advice isn't simply about solitude or silence, it's about solitude as a path to self-knowledge. From Waif To Gentleman's Wife - Julia Justiss ![]() ![]() ![]() The eldest child of the fifth Earl of Leicester, Glenconner was maid of honour at the Queen’s coronation and lady-in-waiting to her childhood friend Princess Margaret. Is her memoir a horror show or a delightful entertainment? A manual for how to live, or how not to live? In truth, I’m not sure even she would know the answer to these questions. Nevertheless, I have to admit to being somewhat unprepared for Lady in Waiting, in which Anne Glenconner muses on her stiff upper lip and how it saw her through a marriage lasting 54 years to a man whose idea of a honeymoon treat was to take her – a girl who had been a virgin only hours before – to a fleapit of a hotel to watch two strangers having sex (“That’s very kind, but no thank you,” she said when invited to join in). B eing very common, I have something of a mania for aristo-lit: a passion for stories about big houses and the wanton eccentrics who inhabit them that began in childhood with Frances Hodgson Burnett’s The Secret Garden, continued into my teenage years with all things Mitford, and now finds ongoing sustenance mostly in diaries ( Chips Channon, I salute you, and all who sailed in you). ![]() ![]() ![]() A pioneering researcher transforms our understanding of trauma. van der Kolk’s own research and that of other leading specialists, The Body Keeps the Score exposes the tremendous power of our relationships both to hurt and to heal-and offers new hope for reclaiming lives.Įssential reading for anyone interested in understanding and treating traumatic stress and the scope of its impact on society.
